چکیده

Acknowledgments The authors are indebted to P. Briole and G. Nunnari for their enthusiasm towards experimenting with GPS methodology on Mt. Etna since 1988 and for their work on making it a powerful tool for research and monitoring in volcanology. Sincere thanks are also due to Prof L. Villari for having started the ground deformation study on Sicilian volcanoes in the 1970s and for helping carry out the first GPS campaigns. Special thanks are due to M. Bonaccorso for his huge effort in building the initial GPS networks and carrying out the GPS measurements in the ‘90s. The authors wish to thank all the colleagues who participated in one or more of the huge number of measurements carried out to produce this unique database. Thanks to Mauro Amore for developing a routine for the automatic control and validation of the RINEX headers, to Antonio D’Agostino for his support during the 2013 survey and to Ivan Nicolosi for his help in compiling the software. Thanks are due to S. Conway for reviewing the manuscript for language and grammar. The work of S. Fagone and C. Giardina was supported by the Servizio Civile Nazionale ‘Terra in movimento: monitoraggio geodetico delle aree a rischio volcanic e sismico della Sicilia’ 2012/2013 Project. This work has been carried out in the framework of the European FP7-MED-SUV (MEDiterranean SUpersite Volcanoes) project, grant agreement 308665.

Global positioning system survey data for active seismic and volcanic areas of eastern Sicily, 1994 to 2013

This work presents and describes a 20-year long database of GPS data collected by geodetic surveys over the seismically and volcanically active eastern Sicily, for a total of more than 6300 measurements. Raw data were initially collected from the various archives at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Sezione di Catania-Osservatorio Etneo and organized in a single repository. He...

Recent Developments in Understanding Natural-Hazards-Generated TEC Perturbations: Measurements and Modeling Results

Natural hazards including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis have been significant threats to humans throughout recorded history. Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS; including the Global Positioning System (GPS)) receivers have become primary sensors to measure signatures associated with natural hazards. These signatures typically include GPS-derived seismic deformation measure...

Petrology and Presentation: A Seven-Stage Model forGeodynamic Evolution of the Northeast Region of Birjand,East of Northern Lut, Eastern Iran

The northeast region of Birjand is located in Lut structural and geological province. In this area we can distinguish two separate volcanic rock groups: intermediate to acidic volcanic rocks, including dacite, andesite, rhyolite and trachyandesite; and basic rocks, including basaltic andesite, mugearite and basalt. In this region, intermediate to acidic rocks, which belong to the Eocene-Miocene...

Descriptive Epidemiology of Human Thyroid Cancer: Experience From a Regional Registry and The “Volcanic Factor”

Thyroid cancer (TC), the most common endocrine tumor, has steadily increased worldwide due to the increase of the papillary histotype. The reasons for this spread have not been established. In addition to more sensitive thyroid nodule screening, the effect of environmental factors cannot be excluded. Because high incidences of TC were found in volcanic areas (Hawaii and Iceland), a volcanic env...

High resolution seismic data coupled to Multibeam bathymetry of Stromboli island collected in the frame of the Stromboli geophysical experiment: implications with the marine geophysics and volcanology of the Aeolian Arc volcanic complex (Sicily, Southern Tyrrhenian sea, Italy)

New high resolution seismic data (Subbottom Chirp) coupled to high resolution Multibeam bathymetry collected in the frame of the Stromboli geophysical experiment aimed at recording active seismic data and tomography of the Stromboli Island are here presented. The Stromboli geophysical experiment has been already carried out based on onshore and offshore data acquisition in order to investigate ...
